DNC Chairman Howard Dean Commemorates Muharram, the Start of the Islamic New Year

Washington, DC -Today Democratic National Committee Chairman Howard Dean issued the following statement in honor of Muharram, the start of the Islamic New Year:

"Today Muslims in America and around the world mark the start of the Islamic New Year. Muslims honor the start of this holy month through prayer and reflection.

"Tradition calls for Muharram to be a month of peace and unity. While Muslims use this time to recommit themselves to the struggle for peace around the world, we also celebrate the diversity of faith and the freedom of religion that makes America such a great nation."
