Dean Statement on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day
January 21, 2008Democratic National Committee Chairman Howard Dean issued the following statement in celebration of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day:
"Today we celebrate the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. On this day the Democratic Party reaffirms our long commitment to civil rights and social justice. Nearly 40 years after Dr. King's death, we remain dedicated to his dream of making a better America. This year, as Republicans continue their attack on voting rights, we'll fight to protect every American's right to vote and have that voted counted.
"This year's Democratic presidential contest makes clear that Americans, like Dr. King, are optimistic about the future of our nation. Voters are coming out in record numbers to support our Democratic candidates because they look like America and talk like America. As we head toward this critical election in November, we remain committed to the American values of freedom, fairness and facing the future - values that Dr. King lived and we honor today."
